The Beat Project at The Quays was set up October 2017, since then we have been running music and creative arts workshops for residents on a weekly basis.
The core team behind the scenes is comprised of the following people who are dedicated to ensuring The Unity Roots Studio supports as many people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless through it music and arts services, projects and courses as it can whilst delivering a quality service that will help people in all aspects of their lives.

The Team


Project Leader and musician

Steve is an extremely driven social entrepreneur and experienced charity CEO having founded an award winning charity for 18 years. He has a strong social conscience, natural empathy with people and a desire to help, nurture and support others.
Steve leads the studio / music project at The Quays and is the founder and Director of Unity Roots CIC, a professional filmmaker, musician and founder and drummer in The Scorchers Rocksteady band. 


Team member and singer

Lisa is a valued team member who is working directly with participants and outside organisations to encourage them to make use of the studio and its facilities / programmes. 

Lisa is an excellent caterer and has undertaken a number of training programmes and also volunteers for local organisations working with vulnerable adults, she is also lead singer in the band Lisa and the Lab Rats formed through the project.

Reuben joined the team in May 2020.

He is a talented musician and plays a number of instruments, he also song writes and has joined the Unity Roots studio team to help develop the project into a fully fledged studio and workshop room but also to train as a support worker specializing in working with vulnerable young people and adults  


Team member and bass player / engineer

Jack is involved in all aspects of the projects development from fixing projectors up to playing bass guitar and being in the in house band. He is also training as a sound engineer and will assist in recording bands and artists in the studio as well as community projects.

Hi I'm Simon and I enjoy all music. I play drums and any percussion, also some guitar and sing a bit.

I  an online radio show 5 times a week and enjoy working with people on a daily basis. 

I have a 24 year career in learning disabilities regards nursing and management. I enjoy being around people and making differences to peoples lives.

Project management and support

The Quays provides accommodation to vulnerable homeless adults with low to medium support needs for a maximum of two years.  During this time our experienced staff work alongside customers and frameworks to provide a person-centred support plan to provide positive outcomes.
